What Nictavia is, what it is not, and what you need to know before putting it in front of a patient.

What it is

A browser-based augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) interface driven by eyelid closure, detected with a camera. It provides text composition with prediction, speech output, quick phrases, email and messaging, a reading view, and a caregiver alert system. It is a communication aid. It is not a medical device, performs no assessment and makes no diagnostic or therapeutic claim.

Requirements

• A laptop or tablet from roughly the last five years with a webcam, running a current Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
• Reasonable front lighting on the face. Backlighting from a window is the most common cause of poor tracking; setup checks for it.
• No installation and no account. Open app.nictavia.com.

Input

• Both eyes, left only or right only — for ptosis or unilateral weakness.
• Thresholds are set from a measured baseline of the patient's involuntary blinks versus deliberate closures, then adapt over the session.
• A forgiving first-contact mode (any closure over 0.8 s selects, slow scanning) lets a patient operate setup themselves; a caregiver path sets numbers directly.

Data and privacy

Camera frames are analysed in the browser and discarded; no video or image data is transmitted or stored. Composed text, contacts and settings live in the browser's local storage on that device. Alerts, mail and messaging pass through Nictavia's EU server only when the patient triggers them. Optional AI suggestions are off by default and require explicit consent. Accessibility of this site and the app

This website is built to WCAG 2.2 AA with full keyboard operation. The app uses one accent colour on a deep neutral background, targets no smaller than 80 px, type no smaller than 20 px, no flashing above 3 Hz, and respects reduced-motion and high-contrast preferences.
